We are now quickly approaching the last few weeks of summer sun and fun.  During this time, savor the simplicity of summer as much as possible, whether it’s treating yourself to a Hazelnut Macchiato and chocolaty dessert at an outdoor café with friends, or soaking up the sun on bike ride through the park.  With our roundup of trendy take-out venues, you can  to fill up your picnic basket with the most delicious delights and spend a relaxing afternoon picnicking in Manhattan.

Chickpea & Olive

Crafting only the freshest of cuisines, Chickpea & Olive practices the farm- to- table concept with their fare.  Their menus are based off of the notion that “less is more,” and to put “peace on a plate.” This is the perfect location to stock up your picnic basket.  Participating in Smorgasburg Saturdays from 11am – 6pm, and Brooklyn Flea Sundays from 11am – 5pm, Chickpea & Olive can be found at East River State Park N.7th & Kent Ave, Brooklyn, NY.  Nourish your body with their delectable Phatty Beet Sliders – the 3oz patty is made with brown rice, beets, mushrooms and lentil beans, garnished with vegan mayo, baby bibb lettuce and homemade Habañero ketchup.  The patty is served on a vegan brioche bun and comes with a couple of fun “fixin’s”: organic local tomatoes, avocado, eggplant bacon, homemade pickled jalapeños and cheddar Daiya cheese.  The sliders are certainly a mouth full, but perfect options for a picnic lunch.  As for the prime side dish to highlight the sliders, Chickpea & Olive’s Potato Salad is refreshing on a hot summer afternoon; prepared with potatoes, dill, pickled red onions, cucumber and tahini mustard herb vinaigrette.

Le Pain Quotidien

This French eatery has the ultimate picnic basket delight: tartines.  If you aren’t familiar with treat, they consist of triangular slices of homemade bread, prepared with all organic ingredients, with a succulent selection of toppings.  The Smoked Atlantic Salmon Tartines are topped with scallions, avocado and chopped dill.  If you do not prefer your tartines fishy, the Prosciutto & Mozzarella di Bufala Tartines are delicious, topped with basil oil and sun-dried tomatoes.  For dessert, Le Pain has many delicacies to choose from for your basket. Waffle & Wolf

Waffle & Wolf takes sandwich making to an entire new level, utilizing “untraditional” waffles folded in half to serve as the sandwich bread.  These gourmet waffle creations are named “CRAVINGS,” and when you glance at the delectable menu, it is clear how they acquired their title.  The menu gives diners two options: do you want your waffle sweet or savory?  If you’re in the mood for a sweet waffle treat, #25 is your sugary pleasure, comprising of walnuts baked in lavender-honey, goat cheese and berries.  #1 is another savory choice, made with creamy banana pudding, cherries, candied walnuts and dark chocolate ganache.  A scrumptious, savory craving is #28.  This waffle is prepared with pulled pork, red onion, horseradish-yogurt and kale chips.  These not-your-average-joe-sandwiches are unique and fun options for an outdoor picnic.  Waffle & Wolf is located at 413 Graham Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11211.  To view their full menu, click here.

520 Madison Avenue beholds a hidden, beautiful secret.  Tiny outdoor tables surround a critical part of our history, overlooked by many passersby.  Five parts of the historical Berlin Wall have been in this section of the city since 1990.  One side of the wall even has a picturesque mural covering its skin, courtesy of German artists Kiddy Citny and Thierry Noir.  This park is a prime location for your picnic venue.

Fort Tryon Park is one of the city’s most gorgeous creations.  Colorful flower gardens landscape the park, accompanied by two playgrounds, outdoor artwork, a gazebo, benches to relax on and the breathtaking view of the Hudson River.

Carl Schurz Park Conservatory is another stunning place to prepare your picnic.  Completed with a Hillside Lawn, vibrant flower gardens, benches and a grand stone staircase, your eyes, in addition to your taste buds, will also have much to feast on.
